Useful Spanish Phrase: How to say “What a shame” in Spanish

In this blog post you’ll learn how to say “what a shame” in Español.

So first of all, in Spanish the word “shame” on its own is veruenza. We use it when we want to express embarrassment.

That’s not the word that we use when we say “what a shame” however. So, bank that word veruenza – I’ll cover it in another of my blog posts.

For now let’s concentrate on these little phrases that I want to teach you.

So the first way of saying “what a shame” in Spanish is:

Que Pena

Que means “what” and Pena means “shame.” You don’t need another little “a” or anything in between, it’s just; Que Pena.

The second one is with the same first word so we’re still going to use que which means “what” but, instead of using Pena, we say lastima so it’s;

Que Lastima

Here’s an example:

“What, you can’t come for the girls night out on Friday? – ¡Que lastima!

So there we have Que lastima and Que Pena .
